Your passport is your key through the doorway to the rest of the world. At least, that’s how we like to think of it – but in reality for many it’s every bit as much a barrier to global freedom. And that’s because different passports carry different powers to give you access to where you want to go. Having a passport opens up a world of opportunity for anyone that is fortunate enough to have one.
However, it’s not a one size fits all kind of document, as there are some passports that are far better than others, in terms of visa-free travel.
Most people don’t really have a choice which passport they want, as it’s normally decided for you at birth when you first become a citizen of your native country.
However, for those of you who think outside the box, and are curious to learn more about passports in general, we’ve put together a list of the 10 most powerful passports in the world in accordance to the Henley Passport Index.

NUMBER 10; Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary (181 destinations)
Slovakia, officially the Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the southwest and the Czech Republic to the northwest. The Slovak passport, issued only to citizens of Slovakia allows for free rights of movement and residence in any of the states of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland.
Lithuania is considered to be one of the Baltic States. The country is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. It is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south and Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest. Lithuanian passport is an official document, issued exclusively to Lithuanian citizens to identify themselves as such to facilitate travel outside Lithuania. Every Lithuanian citizen is also a citizen of the European Union.
Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Its capital, Budapest, is bisected by the Danube River. Its cityscape is studded with architectural landmarks from Buda’s medieval Castle Hill and grand neoclassical buildings. Hungarian passports are issued to Hungarian citizens for international travel by the Central Data Processing, Registration and Election office of the Hungarian Ministry of the interior. Every Hungarian citizen is also a citizen of the European Union.
Lithuania, Hungary and Slovakia have the tenth most powerful passports in the world, according to Hanley Passport Index rating.
NUMBER 9; New Zealand, Malta, Czech Republic, Canada, Australia (183 destinations)
The New Zealand passport has continued to drop down the list of the world’s most powerful passports, according to the Henley Passport Index for 2020. New Zealand placed ninth alongside Malta, Czech Republic, Canada and Australia.
Asian countries have solidified their spots at the top of the list of most the powerful passports in the world.
The Canadian passport is the passport issued to citizens of Canada. It enables the bearer to exit and re-enter Canada freely; travel to and from other countries in accordance with visa requirements; facilitates the process of securing assistance from Canadian consular officials abroad, if necessary; and requests protection for the bearer while abroad. All Canadian passports are issued by the Passport Program of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Australian passports are travel documents issued to Australian citizens under the Australian Passports Act 2005 by the Australian Passport Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, both in Australia and overseas, which enable the passport bearer to travel internationally. Australian citizens are allowed to hold passports from other countries
The Henley Passport Index ranks the world’s passports according to the number of countries that can be entered without a visa for the passport holder. Countries where a visitor’s visa or permit can be obtained easily on arrival are included.
NUMBER 8; United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Greece, Belgium (184 destinations)
United States passports are passports issued to citizens and nationals of the United States of America. They are issued exclusively by the U.S. Department of State. Besides passports, limited use passport cards are issued by the same government agency subject to the same requirements.
